Peer Massage

How does peer massage work?

01

The massage is given by children to each other, fully clothed and only on their back, head, arms and hands.

02

The children are encouraged to use positive, respectful communication verbally & through positive touch. The children must always ask for their partner's permission before they begin any massage routine.

03

Peer massage is recognised as an anti-bullying strategy.
Peer massage is for children aged 3 -12 years of age.

04

Peer Massage can increase well-being, improve concentration and reduce stress levels.

Jessie is a certified teacher of the Massage In Schools Program (MISP).
MISP was founded by Mia Elmsater from Sweden and Sylvie Hetu from Canada in 2000. In 2003 the Massage In Schools Association (MISA) was formed and has evolved into an international organisation with branches in over 35 countries.

The peer massage programme is not intended as a therapy, rather it aims to promote the well-being of children in the knowledge that nurturing touch is a basic need and a powerful tool to help children develop into healthy, well-balanced human beings.

The programme is not exclusive to schools and can be taught in parent and toddler/children groups, community centres, sports centres, summer clubs, after-school care, youth organisations such as Cubs & Scouts, Brownies & Guides and The Woodcraft Folk.

Research has shown that positive massage and
touch can benefit schools, children and families alike by -
The opportunity to learn and experience saying 'yes' and 'no' to touch
A feeling of being individually perceived and acknowledged
Improved concentration levels
Increase in children’s self-esteem and confidence
Increase in creativity
Reduction in bullying and aggression
Overall increase in emotional health and well-being
Improves children’s motor skills
An inclusive programme that embraces all abilities, faiths and races
